To all who wish to engage in discussions with me, I want to make my intentions and approach clear. When participating in debates or conversations, I adhere to a set of guidelines and rules to ensure that the dialogue remains respectful, productive, and focused. While I don’t expect anyone else to follow these same principles, these are the standards I hold myself to.
When discussing any topic, I will do my best to stay on topic. I will ensure that my points are relevant and that my position is clearly defined. I aim to avoid straying into unrelated territory or bringing up arguments that do not pertain to the discussion at hand. I value respect in a debate and will never engage in personal attacks. For me, it’s the argument that matters, not the individual behind it, and I will work hard to listen carefully and understand the perspective of my opponent before I respond.
I will speak clearly and concisely. My goal is to communicate effectively, structuring my arguments so they are easy to understand, and I will do my best to avoid filler words or jargon that could obscure my message. I believe that simplicity often brings clarity.
My arguments will be based on evidence and logic. I will support my points with facts, credible sources, and rational reasoning, and I will avoid making unsupported claims. I will also do my best to ensure that my logic is free from fallacies, staying away from ad hominem attacks, straw man arguments, or any other misleading tactics that might distort the conversation.
Throughout our discussions, I intend to stay calm and composed. I will keep my emotions in check, as I find that remaining cool-headed allows for better dialogue. I will also be civil and courteous at all times, respecting the space and perspective of my opposition, regardless of how much we may disagree.
If my opponent presents counterarguments, I will acknowledge them and address them directly. I will not ignore valid points and will concede when necessary. If I need further clarification, I won’t hesitate to ask questions to better understand their perspective. This is how I choose to engage and grow through these exchanges.
I also commit to avoiding logical fallacies and ensuring my reasoning is sound. I will not employ misleading tactics but will rely on well-founded arguments and rational discourse. And when we reach the end of our discussion, I will make sure to summarize my main points clearly and thank all involved for the chance to engage.
These principles are for me to follow, not anyone else. My opposition may have their own approach to discussions, and I respect that completely. I would not rid anyone of their preferred tools in a debate; these are simply the guidelines I hold myself to in every discussion.
